CURRICULUM

New Year, new beginnings and surely, it will take a little time to get into the “back to school” routine. It is understandable if the first day does not go smoothly as it did in December.  Here are some simple tips that might help:

·   Early Bird Catches Worm.  The child should be in school no later than 8:00 a.m.  This is a “free choice time” and it is easier than in the middle of a circle or during an activity time that the class is already engaged in.

·   Easy Come Easy Go.  When you and your child arrive at school avoid the long “Goodbye.”  Please leave right away.

·   Encourage and Discourage.  Remind your child that school is THEIR special place for fun and learning.  In the morning as you are coming to school encourage the transitions they practiced in the past four months when in school.  When going home ask questions on how the day went, what did he/she learn, or something to encourage the child more.  Hopefully the morning routine and transition will be smoother again.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ WEEK

Catholic Schools’ Week is scheduled from January 31, Monday to February 5, Saturday.  There is no school on January 31, a conference for all Catholic School teachers and administrators island wide.  Within this week our students will celebrate with fun activities and lessons that unite all Catholic Schools in the state.  Please look for upcoming information in the school bulletin and communication letter for more details on these events.  Mahalo.

SCHOOL GRANT FOR PLAYGROUND

St. Joseph Early Learning Center is the grateful recipient of a duo grant that will be used to purchase a new playground structure and safety foundation padding for the front playground area. One grant received was from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation and the other from the Harry Weinberg Foundation.  We are also blessed with a partner and a parishioner Jordan Santos from J2 Santos Construction, Inc.  He will share his precious time, resources and skills to help with the project.  The structure has been ordered, however preparation, planning and construction will take time.

We just thank God for this wonderful blessing and all the people who are happy to help to make it possible.   We look forward to the finished project by the end of this year.

HEALTHY STUDENTS

This month we will be having some visitors to help keep our bodies healthy and safe.  On January 28 we will have the Lion’s Club come in to the classrooms and administer vision screening sessions for each child.
